Senior & Special Needs Greyhounds

What is a senior Greyhound? A senior is a dog that is 7 years of age or older. Adopting a senior has its definite advantages. Older Greyhounds are usually more calm and laid back than younger dogs. They are used to living in a home, so they tend to be house smart, know the rules and are housebroken. Many times, when we receive an older Greyhound it is due to them being returned because of changing family conditions such as divorce, arrival of a new baby etc.. Although these reasons are valid to the people the dog is the one that suffers. He/she is returned for no fault of their own and they are now forced to deal with the transition.

What is a special needs Greyhound? A special needs Greyhound could have a medical condition that might require special medications, special diet, or special care. An example of the medication might be thyroid medication due to an under or over active thyroid. Special needs Greyhounds can lead a full, normal life if given the proper medical attention.

Our adoption fees would include: vaccination update, heartworm test, parasite test and a dental cleaning (if necessary). The adoption fee for a 7 to 9 year old senior Greyhound would be: $100.00. The fee for a senior Greyhound 10 years of age or older would be fully waived. The fees for a special needs Greyhound will be determined on a case by case basis, but are typically reduced from the normal fee of $200.00.

Many of the families associated with GPA Indianapolis have had the privilege of loving one of these beautiful Greyhounds. They would not trade the experience for any amount of money in the world. The Greyhounds listed below are dogs that need special homes to love and care for them. They deserve to have the same chance as the other Greyhounds. PLEASE consider opening your heart and home to a Senior or Special Needs Greyhound.

Thank You.

March 1, 2008 - Able is a very affectionate and sweet boy with beautiful yellow eyes. He will come over to you and lay his head in your lap to be petted. When Able first came to Indy in 2004, we were told us he was in the movie 'Oceans 11' with George Clooney. You can see him in scene 8 when greyhounds are being led out to race. Able has been returned due changing family circumstances. He has adjusted nicely to his foster home and is doing very well. He lived with cats at his previous home and was fine with indoor cats. Able is up-to-date on his shots as of February and had his teeth cleaned at the same time. Able is a real sweetheart and will make someone a wonderful pet.

April 7, 2008 - Aya is a very sweet girl and is a joy to have around. She is very comfortable in my house with my 3 greys and 2 kitties, and is playing with stuffies already. She is eating very well and doesn't seem to mind being crated while we're gone. She would be a great addition to any family and would love to find her forever home with you.

July 16, 2008 - My name is Buddy. I am 7 years old. My foster mom says I am the sweetest boy. I love be around people especially children of all ages. I am crate trained and house broken. I am pet friendly, I live with another male greyhound and a female shepard. We get along pretty good. My foster mom introduced me to these little critters I believe she called them guinea pigs. She was glad that I didn't seem interested in them. I am also crate trained. Thats where I sleep at night. I can climb stairs but I'm more comfortable staying on the main floor of the house. I love to go on walks and ride in a car. I'm not interested in stuffies.

July 17, 2008 - Buddy's special needs: He has Panus - this is an eye condition that is controlled with daily eye drops. The eye drops do not cure Panus but they to keep the disease from progressing. Left untreated, eventually he would go blind. Buddy also is a seizure dog. He is on a low dose of phenobarbitol, an anti-seizure medication, that will also need to continue for the rest of his days. Discontinuation of the medication would result in more frequent & stronger seizures.

December 16, 2007 - Einstein is a wonderful and very sweet, gentle guy. He crates well, and gets along with all the other greys. He has a playful spirit, polished manners, a cute prancing gait and is so easy to live with. His dental work is completed and a minor urinary infection is resolved. He has a big heart full of love to give and receive. He must go into a home with another dog, and not a tiny dog. He is not aggressive with them, they just drive him crazy. This older dog needs a loving and caring home for his later years and he will give back so much. Please consider opening your hearts and home to him.

January 30, 2008 - The big guy is doing so well. He is 5lbs heavier and that serious look has been replaced with a happier one. He spent a week with a step-foster mom, and his playful, 'young pup' attitude had them in stitches and he wore out their much younger hound. They did find out that he doesn't do stairs and isn't about to learn. He attended his first ever Meet and Greet and handled it like it was a daily event He was very comfortable and met everyone with a happy tail and lean. He has a huge heart full of love. Are you the one to get all that love?

May 2, 2008 - Einstein contiues to florish. He has a coat that is softer than most and it glistens. He has gone to several events and loves all the attention. Going to work is another big treat. Einstein is a real lover. He has not been exposed to cats, but if the bunnies and squirrels are a test, he would fail cats. He loves his stuffies and delights in carrying them where ever he goes. Einstein may be a 'Senior' but you would never know that.He would do well in home by himself or with other dogs. He will win your heart and your time with him will be enriched in so many ways.

Other Information:
Has thyroid condition and is on thyroid meds twice a day. Food must be moistened before feeding.
